U-Fig [submitted by zaum88]
This song is about those people sitting in Starbucks, complaining about life on their blogs, and talking about how bad the war and the government is, without supporting their opinion with actions or facts. Attacks those complaints activists who are in fact not activists at all. They are complacent.

I believe this song is about bombs, Maybe Nuclear bombs.
"Melt in the sun, Melt in the sun, Who wants to come with me and melt in the sun?": Some bombs, especially Nuclear ones can be bright and hot as the sun.
"Hide in the sky, Hide in the sky, Who wants to come with me and hide in the sky?": This could be the Bombers High in the sky obscured by the clouds in their planes.
"Should go outside and beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em, beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em": This could be the US who seems to use bombs to make others submit with constant beatings with bombs.
"All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks, And we'll eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em, Come join the cause, Come join the cause, Who wants to come with me and come join the cause?": This one is the fact that many great scientist come up with these bombs and the us will just eat them up for their knowledge (trying to get the scientists to work for us)
"Realize you're blind, And we're out of time, It'll show your mind: Nuclear bombs usually blind their victims right before they are annihilated.

Yo, this song is about the Klan. That's what I hear anyways -- this is a song about ignorance and racism, and that's all I have to say about that.

This song is about the Iraq and Afghani Wars perpetrated by the US.
"Melt in the sun, Melt in the sun, Who wants to come with me and melt in the sun?": Who wants to join the military and come roast in the the middle of the desert with me and the boys for a pointless war.
"Hide in the sky, Hide in the sky, Who wants to come with me and hide in the sky?": In the first Gulf War the US Air Force dominated opposition and in the Second Gulf War, Iraq had no Air Force. Shooting laser guided missles from high above cloud coverage, and let's not forget the infamous "Highway of Death" in the first Gulf War where US helicopter pilots "gunned down" civilians and excaping Iraqi National Gaurd who were fleeing after the "End" of the war.
"Should go outside and beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em, beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em": A bit of parody here. We should go and beat up Bush supporters and/or supporters of the war.
"All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks, And we'll eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em, Come join the cause, Come join the cause, Who wants to come with me and come join the cause?": The ignorance of many Americans who still believe Iraq was behind 911, that Iraq had WMD, or the fact that many people don't care about human life unless it's their own countrymen and jump on the bandwagon with other warmongers.
"Realize you're blind, And we're out of time, It'll show your mind: You've been blinded by the media and probably only a handful of people know the real "Truth", but nothing can be done now, and in the end you will see the truth and horror of what really happened.

hmm, i maybe be different, but this song kinda speaks to me in a racial manner. maybe im wrong? "All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks" stands for the idiots who wave flags that represent racism such as the swastica and confederate flag etc.. who are ignorant to the greatness of diversity. and that they should go beat them.
They should realize that theyre blind and that it will show your mind that this is wrong.

As I see it, there could be two possible meanings to this one. And they contradict each other. First there's the obvious one: the Iraqi war is ridiculous, right-wing patriots are all "pathetic, flag-waving, ignorant geeks." That's certainly a straightforward interpretation...perhaps a bit too straightforward. The other possible definition is that by expressing these cliched anti-conservative sentiments, System of a Down is in fact satirizing a political left that seems to prefer to sit and complain rather than actually do something. Now I think we've all noticed that SOAD's lyrics have a decidedly strong left-wing slant, so perhaps this song really is just conservative-bashing. However, it may also be that the lyrics are a subtle call to action for the band's friends on the left, a call to, in effect, get off their asses and stop acting like a disorganized and arrogant bunch of mewling cowards.

I believe that most (if not all) of System's lyrics have more than one meaning, and often switch between radically different modes, as indicated by the sharp sound transitions in many of their songs. This can be seen in U-Fig, which is one part metal rage, one part rock rant chanting, and one part non-lyrical folksy guitar-work (though these "parts" are more like modes, switched on and switched off, rather than like separate pieces). A general idea in this forum seems to be that U-Fig is partly about complacency in the face of extremes (i.e. war, racism, far-right conservativism, or far-left radicalism). The "you and me should go outside and beat 'em" chant can be leftists talking about beating up fascists, or it could be vice-versa. We must consider time too. This could be speaking about what's happening right now, say, in the US, or in Iraq, or in Israel (Palestinians vs. Israelis), or in North Ireland (Protestants vs. Catholics), but it could also be referring to many other struggles of the past (i.e. Fascists vs. Jews, US Capitalism vs. Soviet Communism, Southern racists vs. black civil rights activists, patriarchial government vs. suffragettes, South African blacks vs. South African whites and the apartheid). But I don't think U-Fig refers to any one particular struggle. Rather, it must refer to all of the above struggles, among others, as a comment on the natural human tendency to create wars and more wars. The "Melt in the Sun/...Hide in the Sky" part can be seen to be a reference to the atom bomb, or perhaps it is just a reference to destructive war-technology in general. The "It'll show your mind/That you have a mind" lines can be applied to any side that believes "beat"ing and "eat"ing their adversaries would show rightness or intelligence. If one puts in the context of the US war in Iraq that's happening now, the aforementioned lines can be either applied to the Republicans and their supporters who believe that their "war on terror" is just and is the most right thing to do in response to 9-11, or it can be applied to vastly larger numbers of people around the world who believe that beating the US down by insulting the president or fighting conservatist people (or even going so far as to commit acts of terrorism) would be the right thing to do in response to what the US is doing and has done to Iraq. In keeping with the multiple-meaning content, which I think is the norm for System of a Down's songs, U-Fig can be seen at once as a call to action (or "call to arms"), a commentary on war and struggles in general, and an anti-war song. The unstated question (or questions) underlying this song seems to be "who's side are you on", or perhaps more importantly, "is there such a thing as a 'right side'? Is there such a thing as a 'good side' if one is willing to stoop to the level of one's enemy?"
U-Fig #8 [submitted by Right-WingSOADFan]
This song is about those "ignorant geeks", whether they be right-wing, left-wing, liberal or conservative who fail to use their brains to formulate their own opinion of an issue and instead simply "join the cause" because it is the cool or patriotic thing to do. Anyone who believes this song is solely about flag-waving conservatives has been blinded themselves by the Fad that is hating George Bush. There are a lot of "pathetic, ignorant geeks" out there whose only reason for voting for John Kerry is that he is not George Bush. Now that's blind.

Now, when I hear this song I'm hearing a song about propaganda techniques etc. to get people to go to war. No offense or anything but if you listen to the lyrics and then think a little it's pretty obvious. Or maybe it's because I just finished an enormous essay about NAZI propaganda for school. Anyways, let me explain:
Some parts are the actual propaganda itself. Go to Iraq and enjoy the hot sun (Melt in the Sun), Fly around/have a good time in the sky (Hide in the Sky - aerial attacks and using stealth jets), and join in and do the proper good thing unlike the enemy who is of course: evil (Come Join the Cause).
Then the song takes a cynical look at the matter. ("You and me - Should go outside and beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em, beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em - All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks - And we'll eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em eat 'em") Meaning that the people who are hearing this are being brainwashed to come along and fight because they're told that they're the good guys. So they go off waving their flag believing their country to be true and just plain wonderful.
At last there's this bit ("Realize you're blind - And we're out of time - It'll show your mind") Which is begging people to realize that they're being brainwashed by propaganda and to stop and think about what they're doing. It may be too late but ("That you have a mind") at least you'll be free of the governments lies and deceit and able to think clearly for yourself by recognizing the propaganda as propaganda.

I think that this song is about the war in Iraq. "Melt in the sun, Melt in the sun, Who wants to come with me and melt in the sun?" refers to the soldiers going out and fighting in the desert. "All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks" refers to the Americans who believe that Iraq was behind 911 and therefore want to destroy the whole country. "You and me, Should go outside and beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em beat 'em" is the soldiers wanting to go out and kill the soldiers of Iraq.
"Realize you're blind, And we're out of time, It'll show your mind" is refering to how the media has told us that Iraq is responsible for 911 and we believe it. It tells us how we should think before we believe what the media tells us.
